Degradation at the InSight Landing Site, Homestead Hollow , Mars: Constraints From Rock Heights and Shapes

چکیده

Rock shapes and heights around the InSight lander are examined to refine degradation history of 27 m-diameter Homestead hollow. Results document decreasing average exposed rock height increasing percentage rocks where comprises short axis from outside within hollow support prior models ejecta deflation accompanied by infilling. We estimate 0.3 m at current rim that is realistic compared relief, original thickness, predicted aeolian contributions also find embayed basalt appear platy, bladed, elongate in a triangular form factor plot, more discoidal bladed an axes ratio plot. By contrast, expected based on terrestrial studies mostly compact, compact elongated, plots, equant with lesser, but significant disc- blade-shaped plots. addition 10 cm near rim, account for continued partial embedding ejecta, yields best match between observed shapes. Exposure small supports rates 10−4 m/Myr during most history. indicate downwind deposition can degraded crater. Our approach new tool characterizing crater regolith-covered lava plains Mars.

Perchlorate Salt Effects on Rock Weathering on Mars at the Phoenix Landing Site

Statement of the problem: The Phoenix Mission was the first to land in the polar regions on Mars. The mission revealed three surprising results: (1) The surface at the landing site had a very low concentration of large size rocks, (2) The unexpectedly sticky nature of the soil prevented it initially from falling through one of the instrument’s screens as planned, (3) Perchlorate salt was found ...

Evidence for calcium carbonate at the Mars Phoenix landing site.

Carbonates are generally products of aqueous processes and may hold important clues about the history of liquid water on the surface of Mars. Calcium carbonate (approximately 3 to 5 weight percent) has been identified in the soils around the Phoenix landing site by scanning calorimetry showing an endothermic transition beginning around 725 degrees C accompanied by evolution of carbon dioxide an...

REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND ROCK DISTRIBUTIONS OF THE MARS PHOENIX LANDING SITE. T. Heet

Introduction: In May 2008 the Phoenix Lander descended into the north polar region of Mars. It landed at 68.22 N, 234.25 E in a shallow valley about 20 km west of a 10 km crater named Heimdall. Phoenix imaged local geomorphology, determined local ice table depth and analyzed 19 soil samples from within a ~15 m 2 work volume. Important to
